Several gun ranges offer the class. Typically a 1 day class will take 10-12 hours due to the classroom portion, and the qualifying portion of the test. Part of the class will usually include fingerprinting for FBI and Texas DPS, as well as what to put on your application. Your application has to be precise and not have any omissions, or your license will be rejected by DPS. I took mine at DFW Gun Range on Mockingbird in Dallas, the cost was $120 (class) + the fee to send to Texas $140 (several exemptions are available including if you are associated with a court or law-enforcement agency, a veteran, senior citizen, etc). It is well worth it and covers some parts of the law you never knew you were not supposed to carry. It's important to know that a CHL means just that: Concealed. Presently, it is illegal to carry a firearm where it can be seen in plain view, unless you are law enforcement. Texas does not have a true open-carry (yet). Take your class, but do not delay sending in your application. I took my class the last weekend of January, and sent in the application the first week of April due to the fact that I did the application online and they had to send me the packet in the mail (if done online, you can't use the packets they give you in class--per DPS customer service representatives). It's now the first half of June and I'm still waiting for the license to arrive. They have an incredible back-log of applications due to the irrational panic that congress supposedly will outlaw all firearms-which can't be done completely anyway. Basic semi's won't be outlawed anytime soon, so everyone should relax, IMHO. |
