Dear Friend:

This week is significant for a number of reasons.  Not only is Barack Obama the first black United States President, he is one of only 17 to be reelected.

When President Obama takes the oath of office on Monday, he will do so using the Bibles of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and President Abraham Lincoln.

This year is the 150th Anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation.  It also is the 50th Anniversary of the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom.  While we have come a long way as a country since the Emancipation Proclamation, many are still struggling to find freedom from poverty and violence.

In one of Dr. King’s last sermons he argued, “If a man doesn’t have a job or an income, he has neither life nor liberty nor the possibility for the pursuit of happiness.  He merely exists.”  As the country reflects on Dr. King’s life and legacy, we must not reduce the content of his speech on the Washington Mall to “I Have A Dream.”  He also spoke of the ‘twin evils of discrimination and economic deprivation.

I hope you will join with me in BUILDING A BETTER FUTURE for residents of the 2nd Congressional District.  Together, we can work to fulfill Dr. King’s dream of equal opportunity for everyone.

Sincerely,

Anthony Beale
