For the last four years we have had two pots, with plants in them, in front of our house on 41st. This morning we found that someone had stolen them. It would be hard to miss someone carrying them down the street. They were about 10 inches across, square off white planters, with a tall spike plant in each of them. They each weighed about 40 pounds. The spike plants were 4 years old and about 4 feet high. There were impatians (small red flowers) in one of them and a geranium in the other. If someone saw anything please let us know. I was a little surprised. But last year I know they stole the whole water fountain from across the street (it was in their garden in the front of their house). I guess you never know what people will decide they want.

I know the feeling

Each year since we moved here, we too have put planters in the front and on the porch of our home. Last year some kids stole the planter off our porch. Not the ones down below on the side walk, but the one on the porch. The feeling of violation is odd when you think of someone that close to your front door. So, I went to Home Depot to find a solution. What I purchased was some of the plastic coated wound cable. You need a bolt cutter to get through it. The I poked several holes in the pots about 12'' from the top of the pot. Any closer to the top, they could break the pot to remove the cable. You get these ''kits'' to creat loops in the ends of the cable which require a wrench and several other tools to put together and take apart. And padlocks of some sort. I connected each pot to the porch railings. And the reason we know it was kids, there was a very large chocalate bar, one of those $2 or $3 ones, in the hanging basket right above the planter they took.
Also, it occured at around 12:30 a.m.. I could have prevented it but was unsure of what I was hearing and then too was not sure who or if armed. Was not taking a chance unless they actually broke into the house but the alarm would have fixed that. I too had to wonder about how something so huge went unnoticed. It was late. I also had to wonder when a 9 foot basket ball hoop stand was taken from our neighbors home. They found it up on Mt. Vernon by the way, got it back and chained it to their fence. I haven't seen the planter we lost. The reason for it not being noticed, has to be the times when these thing go missing. So, you do what you need to do. It stinks but that is ''big city'' living especially when kids do not have proper supervision or any morals.

Hows this for the kicker, I forgot to mention that it disappeared the Saturday night before Mother's Day. Says a lot about who took it if their mother accepted it, probably knowing it had to be stolen, as a gift. No morals.
