SPNA Meeting Minutes 9-10-2007

Quincie Douglas Neighborhood Center

The meeting was called to order at 6:40 p.m. by Maggie Gerring, co-chair. Introductions were made and dues were collected. Minutes of the meeting held August 6, 2007 were read and approved. Signatures were collected on the petition to name the walking path at Silverlake Park after Louis Padilla.

TPD officer Mike Lapedus reported the special summer deployment had ended but they were considering continuation of the increased manpower. New officers in the sector are also resulting in higher staff level. Since school has started less youth are loitering and vandalism and trepassing have dropped. At residents' request they enforcing zero tolerance on noisy parties and illegal parking in Casas de Kino. Residents complained about an overgrown lot where homeless are camping and illegal activities are occurring.

Ann Vargas from City of Tucson reported that the Allen Hall building at 1750 E. Silverlake will be vacated in 4 years. The city is acting on behalf of the Army to consider and recommend a new use for the building. Federal priorities include homeless services or public benefits like emergency management, education, parks and recreation, law enforcement, etc. Proposals for use of the building are due October 1st. Residents are encouraged to comment on what uses they approve and disapprove of.

SPNA annual meeting including election of officers and directors will be held October 1. Nominees and volunteers are needed.

Planning on the Bridges development continues. They are coordinating with Pima County and need clearance from the Army Corps of Engineers but should start grading for flood control and drainage issues in October.

Attention was called to announcements printed on the agenda. Joy Wilcox from PREP reported that they are planning a community forum and would be holding a planning meeting on 9/19. In addition, a representative from Quincie Douglas Library reported on their upcoming activities. It was also announced that a Mobile Health Clinic is coming to Quincie Douglas on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of each month from noon to 3:00 p.m. and is open to everyone regardless of insurance coverage.
