Danger of Circuit Breaker Boxes Fire Hazard

Posted in: Circle Ginny

There was an article in the Middletown Journal last week regarding circuit breaker boxes made by a company called Federal Pacific and installed in homes built during the years 1950-1980.  The boxes have been responsible for house fires and are considered dangerous to have.  It says Federal Pacific on the outside panel of the box and inside there is a red line where the circuits line up.  You can also Google for more information and pictures of these boxes.  I have one and perhaps others on Circle Ginny may have one as well.  Even though I have lived here 30 years with no issue, I decided to call an electrician.  He knew about the dangers and said he has had to replace several of these boxes due to the possible risks.  If a fire happens and your insurance company finds out the box is responsible, they may deny the claim, or if you try to sell your home with this type of box, an inspector will not pass it.  The actual company - Federal Pacific - went out of business years ago and so there was not a recall or anything like that.  Just a word of caution, wanted to pass the information along.
