On July 24th, 1999, the Texas Historical Commission approved the City of San Antonio's nomination to place the northern end of the Lavaca Neighborhood on the National Register of Historic Places. Boundaries include the "area roughly bounded by South Alamo Street, South Presa Street, Alley between Camargo and Callahan [sic] Streets [sic], Labor Street, and Garfield Alley." The application will be sent to Washington, DC to be posted and, if there are no objections, the district will be placed on the National Register.
The Lavaca Neighborhood Association's work will not stop here, however. Efforts are now underway to begin a second phase to annex the southern portions of the neighborhood into the Historic District. Help is needed. Attend a general assembly meeting to see how you can assist.
