What's up with this??? I read the newsletter every time I get it and I didn't hear one thing about this meeting. Not that Im against a charter school occupying the Northrop School. I just would like to know what's going on in my neighborhood. I actually would much rather a charter school occupy the building that for it to be torn down and a senior highrise/assisted living home (ant farm for seniors) is put in it's place. We have enough condo's/apartments/ant farms in the area. Enough is Enough. Let Northrop be used for what it was meant to be used for and that is for educating our children!!!!!!
Field Regina Northrop Neighborhood Group (FRNNG) Board Meeting
Minneapolis Public Schools (MPS) invites you to the Field Regina Northrop Neighborhood Group (FRNNG) Board meeting on Wednesday, June 18, 2008, to discuss the redevelopment of the former Northrop School site located at 1611 East 46th Street.
Over the last several months, MPS has engaged the community to develop recommendations on how to best redeveloped twelve closed school sites throughout the district. Based on the work done with Northrop's Site Asset Community Group, there was a recommendation made for the Northrop site to: "sell the site for the purpose of redeveloping for senior housing".
As the process continues to move forward to find and secure a developer to redevelop the site, the property will remain vacant for approximately a year. During this time, the district plans to use the building to temporarily house one of its charter school programs - Oh Day Aki - one of the first American Indian-operated schools in the nation. Oh Day Aki has a long, rich history of teaching urban Native students.
The Northrop site will be used to temporarily house Oh Day Aki's kindergarten through eighth grade program while their current site is being renovated. The members of the Northrop Site Asset Group, along with the MPS administration, believe this plan is a beneficial solution for all concerned: the students, families and staff of Oh Day Aki, and the Northrop community.
At the meeting, MPS staff will provide additional information regarding the temporary use of Northrop as well as the implementation timeline for redeveloping the site for senior housing.

Site Asset Group Meetings
The second phase of the Community Asset Development Process included working with small groups referred to as Site Asset Groups (SAG) in the winter and spring of 2008. The purpose of the Site Asset Groups was to provide the information, communication, research and responsiveness required for a successful strategic plan process for each site.
The SAG also assisted in presenting the recommended options to the Minneapolis Public Schools Board of Education in the spring/summer of 2008 for a final vote.
