Auburndale and Scottsdale Neighborhood History and Information

Auburndale is the southernmost neighborhood in Louisville, located directly south of Iroquois Park and bounded by east, and the city limits to the west and south. The area was once part of Isaac H. Fenley’s farm, known as Hickory Grove, which covered eleven hundred acres by 1879. In 1907 engineer and developer W.E. Stonestreet acquired a parcel of land around New Cut Road and Third Street Road and began to subdivide the area for residential use.

The community remained sparsely populated Palatka Road to the north, a combination of Third Street and New Cut Road to the until the 1960’s, when developers promoted its proximity to the park and the city annexed the area. The community remains mostly residential.

Scottsdale was developed about 40 years ago. In the early 70's an attempt to start a neighborhood association failed , because of a lack of interest. In 1993 a number of concerned residents met at what is now On Fire Christian Center, to discuss the formation of a neighborhood association. This time because of growing problems with bad drainage and an unsightly entrance , plus other concerns, everyone one present at that meeting was determined to get our neighborhood association organized. We had a dedicated group of officers and board members.We also made a decison to incorparte our association.

This dedication carried us through rough times especially during the devistating floods of March 1, 1997 when so many of our neighbors suffered terrible losses and flood damage.

We entered into a few years of inactivity until the spring of 2005 when Melvin Mitchell a long time resident and homeowner decided to approach his neighbors ,then contact Louisville Metro to help us reactivate our neighborhood association. We hope that every resident will take an active interest in re-establishing this assocation, and to make this one of the best neighborhoods in South Louisville.
