Proposed dog park in Denver Park

Posted in: Shore Acres
In its November 2003 issue of ?“the SANDS?”, the Shore Acres Civic Association announced it will host discussions on the possible addition of a dog park to Denver Park. While dog parks in general may be beneficial to a community, here are some reasons that Denver Park is not a good location for consideration:
1) Denver Park is a small, quiet, neighborhood park that makes it a rare treasure for our entire community to enjoy. Adding a dog park would ?“put it on the map?” citywide and countywide, dramatically increasing both the number of people using Denver Park and the amount of automobile traffic on our streets.
2) Denver Park is in a flood zone and the entire park floods regularly. Adding a dog park would concentrate a higher volume of dogs and people into a smaller flood prone area, which would create a dangerous quagmire of standing water, mud, and dog feces. Dog feces contain billions of fecal coliform bacteria, some of which can cause disease in humans.
3) Denver Park is unique in that residential homes are directly connected to its entire perimeter, and there is no buffer zone of a city street to reduce noise. Adding a dog park to this type of unique layout would have a direct negative ?“back yard?” impact on many homeowners close to the dog park area.
4) Denver Park is already a perfect blend of wide-open natural areas and a few man-made facilities. Adding more man-made facilities such as a dog park would disrupt this balance and detract from the natural beauty and tranquility of the park.
5) In light of all the concerns stated above, the proposed addition of a dog park to Denver Park would have a negative impact on the park, those who enjoy it, and those who live near it. This negative impact could possibly affect property values in the immediate area.
