Thinking of moving!

Posted in: Alta Vista Block Watch
Hello to all,

Is it just my perception or is the hood going to crap? I've lived here 12 years and it seems that decline of the area (especially around 27th ave and Northern) has increased dramatically.

I see, and ''sense'', an increase in gang activity but am not sure how much of it is just my imagination. So many houses are now on the market and there are many others that look abandoned.

I am happy with my home and have a very low house payment but I am seriously thinking of moving.

Is anyone from Alta Vista out there?

Best wishes,
James

You have lived here that long? Wow! Have you really noticed that much of a differance in the hood?

I have been here almost 40 years. Yes, it has really gone down. There are still a lot of good people, one just has to watch out  and be alert. It helps to call crime watch and work with you good neighbors. Unfortunateluy I don't speek the predominate language of the area anymore.

Hello James.   Our family bought our Alta Vista home in 1954 and many changes have occured over the intervening decades.   Phoenix has certainly engulfed us from an area of open canals, cottonwoods and fields to the urban setting we now have.   Some of these changes have been typical of growth, both good and not so good.   We have a lot of Hispanic neighbors now and I find their friendship and helpfulness is mostly genuine and appreciated.   Regretably, low housing prices also attract some undesireables.   This is why Block Watch programs can be of great assistance in raising awareness of issues and appropriate measures to combat problems.   In that regard communication is an essential with our immediate neighbors, but, do you know their names and do you make the first step in offering help and assistance to them?    We begin to improve Alta Vista one household at a time.
