DENVER OFFICE OF CULTURAL AFFAIRS ANNOUNCES ENTERTAINMENT LINE-U

FOR 2005 MAYOR?’S AWARDS FOR EXCELLENCE IN THE ARTS

DENVER) The Denver Office of Cultural Affairs is pleased to announce the exciting entertainment line-up for the 2005 Mayor’s Awards for Excellence in the Arts. This free community celebration will be held on Tuesday, February 21, 2006, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the Ellie Caulkins Opera House at the Denver Performing Arts Complex.

2005 Mayor’s Awards for Excellence in the Arts Performers (in order of appearance):

Lannie Garrett

Now performing at her own nightclub in downtown Denver, Lannie's Clocktower Cabaret, Lannie Garrett is Colorado's most versatile chanteuse. Her undeniable stage presence, sharp comedic instincts and natural ability to connect with an audience have placed her in high demand as a singer and entertainer at events across the nation. Outstanding performances have earned her a large and loyal following, as well as endless sold-out shows.

Colorado Ballet

The Colorado Ballet will present Janelle Cooke in a solo dance excerpt titled I Can Dream, Can't I. The piece is choreographed by Paul Taylor with music by the Andrews Sisters and costume by Santo Loquasto.

Cleo Parker Robinson

Denver’s own “Living Legend of Dance,” as named by The New York Times, Cleo Parker Robinson will dance an excerpt of Barrel House Blues as a tribute to the 2005 awardees. Barrel House Blues was choreographed by the legendary Katherine Dunham. Dunham created this “slice-of-life” performance based on a brief encounter in a small Chicago jazz club in 1936. Dunham selected the Cleo Parker Robinson Dance Ensemble to preserve this historic masterpiece, giving Cleo’s company the exclusive right to perform this work as part of their repertoire.

Opera Colorado

Opera Colorado will present Philip Webb, singing "Nessun Dorma" from Puccini's Turandot. Making his Opera Colorado debut, Webb is currently performing the leading male tenor role of Pollione in Norma in the Ellie Caulkins Opera House. Webb’s resume includes national and international performances with the New York City Opera, Op?©ra de Qu?©bec and Vienna Staatsoper, to name a few.

The 2005 Mayor’s Awards for Excellence in the Arts honorees are Ron Henderson, Daniel and Maruca Salazar and Shadow Theatre Company. In addition, Eleanor “Ellie” Caulkins and the late George Caulkins will receive the first Mayor’s Cultural Legacy Award. Mayor Hickenlooper will present the awards to the honorees at the event.

Please RSVP to 720-865-4318.

First presented in 1986, the Mayor’s Awards for Excellence in the Arts is an annual tradition of recognizing individuals and organizations that have made significant and lasting contributions to the arts in the City and County of Denver.
