Mr. Dan Charles complained to the owner of the Stewart Foods and could not get the owner or the tenant of the store to listen to his pleas. He contacted the police, city officals and whomever would listen. Finally at last on Thursday, January 19, 2006 Judge Harland H. Hale, prosector Bridget Carty and more than twenty South Side residents and supporters heard him. Judge Hale ruled that Stewart Foods located at 691 E. Stewart Ave. had been and was a nuisance to the community. Judge Hale order the store padlocked. Stewart Foods became the first corner store to be padlocked. Judge Hale and Mr. Charles sent a message to property owners and their tenants. You are not above the law. You must be aware and responsible for what happens in and on your property. Go Mr. Charles and South Side. You made history.
