William S. Sparr

Our neighborhood was annexed to the City of Glendale on August 24, 1924. It was named after a prominent businessman William S. Sparr.

Since much of our area was originally fruit trees William S. Sparr opened the Sparr Fruit Packing Company located on Glendale avenue. Ultimately he became a land developer which led to the area we know call home - Sparr Heights.

In the 20's & 30's Sparr Heights became well known as the end of the line for the Los Angeles to Montrose extension of the Union Pacific Railroad.

The Sparr Senior Center now serves as a meeting place for a variety of community activities.

The Birth of Our Website

This website was brought to life by Ron Scott. It was born on Saturday morning, March 10, 2001. It has come to life with the assistance of Glendale "Neighlobhood Services Administrator" Sam Engel and Planner, Vilia Zemaitaitis. I have also recieved support from the Glendale Center Library - Special Collections Section with the photographs. My wife, Melody, has been very supportive with the photos and allowing me the time to "sit and play with my project."

The idea came from other neighborhood websites like "Bungalow Heaven" and the "West Adams District."

About our association

Sparr Heights Goes On-Line

Our goal is simply to provide THE most "state-of-the-art" means of meeting, learning, and informing each other available. We want to create a unique community identity for those of us here in Sparr Heights.

We need your organization to to come "on-line" with us. If your not-for-profit organization has at least five (5) members who reside in Sparr Heights and your organization is open to the public then you are welcome and encouraged to use our website to share your stories, news, and activities that would be of interest to all of us. We are particularly interested in PTA's, sports activities, churches, scouts, social interests, and the like. If you have a "hot link" we would love to add you to our site.

Who we are NOT

We have no dues, no boards, no meetings, no political agenda, no fund-raising activites, and no commercial activity.
