Historic Swan Lake District

It was in March 1983 that the Swan Lake Neighborhood Association received non-profit Certificate of Incorporation from the State of Oklahoma.
Later, in February 1998, the Swan Lake neighborhood was approved on the National Register of Historic Places.

The mission of the Swan Lake Neighborhood Association is to help preserve the historic character of this neighborhood.
All residents within the boundaries of Swan Lake are welcomed and encouraged to become active members of the association.

In The Beginning, A Watering Hole

At the beginning of the 1900's, a natural spring provided water for what became Orcutt Lake, on ranch land owned by Colonel A. D. Orcutt.
At the time, it was not much more than a watering hole for livestock.
Orcutt's son, Samuel A. Orcutt, purchased additional acreage to build a park and an artificial lake.
The park was developed into an amusement park in 1910, complete with trolley service between the park and downtown Tulsa.
The park included an enclosed dance pavilion, a swimming pool and a roller coaster.
By 1917, homes began cropping up around the park and the area was renamed Swan Lake.
Eight years later, residential construction was well established.

Why is Swan Lake Historic?

The Tulsa Preservation Commission offers this description:
"Swan Lake is the focal point of the district of the same name, which includes the commercial area on 15th Street and extends to major arterials on the north, east, south and west.

Two-story houses built around the lake from 1919 to the present represent a variety of architectural styles including Spanish, Georgian Revival and vernacular interpretations honoring the swan.
Some are now duplexes.
Most sit on high ground overlooking the city-owned lake.
The remainder of the neighborhood is similar in scale, containing bungalows, two-story houses, quadruplexes and six-plexes of stone, clapboard and stucco.
The Swan Lake area has more two- and three-story, 1920 to 1930 multi-family apartments and duplexes than any other residential area in Tulsa."

About our association

Meetings

All meetings are open to the public.

General meetings are held four times a year, typically in March, June, September and December.
The December meeting includes officer elections for the next year.
Executive meetings are held monthly.
Please see our "Sign of the Swan newsletter" for the bylaws of this association.

Election of Officers

Any resident or business owner within the boundaries of the Swan Lake Historic District is eligable to run for the office of President, Vice-President, Treasurer or Secretary.
The term is for one year and the list of duties changes as per the needs of the neighborhood and association.

Membership Dues

Annual recommended membership dues for the Swan Lake Neighborhood Association are $25.00, but are not mandatory.
Money goes towards the publication of the newsletter, "Sign of the Swan", printing costs, food and/or decorations for various events held throughout the year.
