Awning Info

Our deck faces almost due west with little or no protection from trees. We spent little or no time on it in the summers since we moved in, and the afternoon sun made our breakfast room miserable, along with our a/c bill.

Our future plans are to enlarge/cover the deck, but for now the awning was the perfect answer. It was custom made and ordered to blend in with the surroundings. It is very easy to raise and lower, although I do very little of that unless a storm blows up. It has made the deck a livable area, keeps it very cool, the kitchen is much more comfortable this year. I will be keeping the awning closed in the winter to allow the sun to heat it. We think it is very attractive, and you are welcome to come and see it.

We could not find out anything about awnings in the neighborhood either.

I viewed with interest the deck awning situation.If the parties would have looked in their phone book provided by the ASSN each year,they would have seen committees with names to contact. Granted a Board member should have known this but therein lies the problem. Everyone remember this at Election time. Vote in people who can do the job! Do YOU ALL attend meetings?

In response to your advice, you might like to know that the Board member I contacted regarding the awning question was the architectural committee chairman.

Installing a deck awning that is attached to a house without obtaining prior approval of the ARC appears to be a violation of the Woodlands Declaration.

FYI, I am not on the BOD not the ARC, nor do I work for Ghertner, our management company.
