let's bring more sidewalks and crosswalks to 46th & murphy!

that intersection is so unbelievably unpedestrian friendly i can't believe it. it is a danger zone for anyone not in a car. whenever i walk thru there i think to myself ''my goodness! this is crazy!''

Sidewalks a plus

I would like more sidewalks and crosswalks added as well. I spoke with our mayor about this a year ago to get his impression. He pointed out that there are still many in the neighborhood that oppose giving up any part of their property for the development of sidewalks. I'm sure that I can't change minds about this but as a person with a sidewalk running through his Elkins Ave. front-yard, I can say that it is viewed by my family as a big bonus. I lived on Nebraska Ave. for 5 years and worried for my own safety, the safety of my wife and daughter, and others that ventured near the road. Having sidewalks not only makes us feel safer, but it helps promote the friendly environment that I have come to associate with Sylvan Park.

I also agree that we should have crosswalks on 46th and Murphy -- although, I must admit, as a Nashvillian I am just as guilty as I can be for not yielding every time I'm supposed to. Along with new crosswalks there ought to be some crosswalk etiquette flyers distributed through our neighborhood to help remind careful but otherwise unaware drivers like myself that the crosswalk exists for a purpose.

Finally, I am quite happy to see Metro Police monitoring Elkins Ave. for speeders. The traffic calming on our street (added stop signs) has helped, but we still have folks driving in excess of safe speeds on our road regularly. The increased attention by Metro is welcome in my eyes and I thank them.

How to get this done

There are probably several ways to proceed, but I think with the current administration your best method is to come to the neighborhood association meeting, ask to form a task force, circulate a petition for signatures, get ''Tying Nashville Together'' or other similar organizations to endorse it, ask for the involvement and support of our councilman John Summers, and follow the process.

Folks just like yourself are how we got Nebraska traffic calmed, stop signs strategically placed to avoid cut-throughs, and so forth.

I totally agree with you. We live on Sloan Road (46th becomes Sloan at the Murphy intersection). Walking to the strip of neighborhood businesses (Red Rooster, Scoop, McCabe Market, etc.) is so dangerous as people fly around that curve there. The pedestrian has no option but to walk on the street or in someone's yard. I would welcome sidewalks on my property as most pedestrians have already worn a path in our grass. I think the sidewalks would encourage walking, business for local establishments, and make our neighborhood safer. My husband and I plan to attend the next Neighborhood Association meeting to help bring this issue to light. Hope to see you guys there!
