Night before last I received a caller at the front door who was a member of the groups that drop off a van full of inner-city folks to sell magazines or ask for donations to ''keep them out of trouble'' and although I support charities for similar purposes, am very against the tactics of these groups and object to being harrassed at my front door for money. Do we not have rules and security gates for just these reasons? I was especially insulted by his reference to skin color, as though every day I do not work with and teach many persons of color. What can we as a group do to limit the frontdoor traffic, and does anyone besides me see the system at the gate as useless when its based on phone numbers? All anyone needs to do is find the number of one resident, and be able to march in anytime. How about the polite drivers who wait behind a resident at the gate, then swerve around him as soon as it opens?
