Many residents of Florence Park South have small children who would benefit from having a local play area within the boundaries of our neighborhood. For these families, walking across 21st Street to access Florence Park is too dangerous and is simply out of the question.
We also have a great number of adults, who enjoy walking the neighborhood, who have expressed an interest in having a place to meet and chat with others during a leisurely stroll.
The City of Tulsa has made it possible for us to use the property located at the intersection of 21st Place and Delaware Court as a ''park-like'' facility.
In addition, they will provide two park benches, a picnic table (both made of graffiti resistant materials that never painting) and a charcoal grill all free of charge.
All we need do is ask.
In the future, the site could be used as a common area for neighborhood gatherings such as block parties and association meetings. We could even install a weatherproof bulletin board for community calendars, lost pet info, announcements etc.
On the flip side of the issue....
Some residents near the property express concerns of homeless persons sleeping on the benches, inviting an additional crime element to the area. They also fear unsupervised children may cause damages to residences near the park area or may climb into back yards to go after a lost ball or Frisbee only to be attacked by a protective dog.
And while The Florence Park South Neighborhood Association has agreed to maintain property, some residents feel there should be no flowers, plants, trees, shrubs or signage added to the property in fear of it turning into a neglected eye sore.
Both sides of the issue have valid points to consider. In the end, we must make our decisions based on what is best for the neighborhood as a community.
