Four members of the Village Council; Rozena Davis, Judy O?’Brien, Paul Parrish and John Shaw, attended a one day course offered by the Ohio Municipal League. The course entitled, ?“General Power of Municipalities and Municipal Officers?”, offered an overview of the general powers of municipalities as provided for by the Ohio Constitution and the Ohio Revised Code. There were also discussions about Home Rule and Charters. A session was provided on Tort Liability, Sovereign Immunity, and Municipal Official Liability. Discussions were also held about the Ohio Open Meetings and Public Records laws and the day ended with a session on zoning and planning.
The Ohio Municipal League through their Leadership Training Academy offered this course for first time and newly elected public officials. There were over 200 public officials in attendance at the course. The Leadership Training Academy offers a variety of courses throughout the state on such subjects as Municipal Financial Management, Public Personnel Management, Ethics for Elected Officials, Planning and Development, and Networking and Communications. Public Officials completing 40 hours of continuing education will be given public recognition for learning more about the job they have taken on and trying to serve the electors of their municipality better.
Council members found the training very informative and hope to put to use the information that they learned from the meeting. More information about the training through the Leadership Training Academy can be found on the Ohio Municipal League?’s website at http://www.omunileague.org.
