Lieutenant Governor Dewhurst and Senator Deuell Team Up and Pass Tough "Jessica's Law" Legislation

Austin - Today, Republican Party of Texas applauded the Texas Senate Republicans led by Lieutenant Governor David Dewhurst and State Senator Bob Deuell (R-Greenville) for passing House Bill 8 ("Jessica's Law") authored and carried in the Texas House by State Representative Debbie Riddle (R-Houston). The Texas Senate passed the measure 30-1, which would make sexual offenders who are convicted a second time for the same offense eligible for the death penalty.

"Sexual predators have been sent a message by our legislators; don't mess with our kids and if you do you may pay the ultimate price," said Hans Klingler, Spokesman for the Texas GOP.

House Bill 8 passed the Texas House of Representatives with overwhelming bi-partisan support in March. Senator Bob Deuell carried the bill successfully in the Texas Senate, eventually gaining bipartisan help and support to pass this vital legislation.

"Lieutenant Governor David Dewhurst, Senator Bob Deuell and the Texas Senate hung tough on behalf of protecting our kids and getting these violent predators off the streets for good. We commend them on their leadership," Klingler went on to say.

House Bill 8 will now go to Governor Rick Perry for his signature in the coming weeks.
