Currently there is a bill that is being voted on to allow TEXANS social security number to become open to request under FOIA.
To date, social security numbers are included in such things as: deeds, mortgages, bank statements, credit unions, drivers license, auto purchase, real estate transactions, marriage license, divorce degrees, birth certificates, etc...
Considering the ongoing and increasing amount of identity theft, combined with the law that states
"Section 552.147 is a portion of the Texas Public Information Act added by the 79th Legislature, which says: “(a) The social security number of a living person is excepted from the requirements of Section0 552.021.” and “(b) A governmental body may redact the social security number of a living person from any information the governmental body discloses under Section0 552.021 without the necessity of requesting a decision from the attorney general under Subchapter G.”
is an identity theft invitation. Allowing and failing to stop this bill will only encourage and promote more identity theft. Opening pandora's box for more lost funds, headaches and frustration for future identity theft victims.
