I am proud to announce the arrival of a new neighborhood gathering place to serve 7th District residents.  The Long Beach Sunday Market in California Heights launches on Sunday, November 22! Capture that wholesome small town feeling by joining friends and neighbors at this new Sunday Farmers Market and Community Marketplace.

The Long Beach Sunday Market in California Heights will be held weekly from 9am to 2pm on the playground at Longfellow Elementary, California Road at Bixby.  The theme of the market is sustainability, of the schools, of the environment, and our sense of community and civic engagement.

Opening Day:     Sunday November 22
What:                Long Beach Sunday Market
When:               Sundays 9a-2p
Where:              Longfellow Elementary Playground

An assortment of local business and community groups will be there opening day.  Stop by the Hughes PTA's Bag Booth, visit with the Long Beach Boot Camp's trainers, or check-in with Johnny Reb's - they'll be there taking orders for Thanksgiving dinner!

The market will have all the basics and some special amenities.  To be sure, farmers will be there with a variety of fresh produce, food vendors with prepared food even a coffee cart.  We are proud provide family friendly activities like the tot lot, a chess club, along with workshops featuring local experts on hand to share their knowledge on art, gardening, cooking, and recycling.

Any local experts wanting to conduct a workshop should sign up to teach a session! For example, at the December 6th market - Hughes Goes Green will be teaching us all about the importance of trash, where it goes, where we should put it and how not create it.  They will be doing an actual sewing demo on making totes out of recycled Capri Sun pouches!  Please check our calendar for upcoming workshops topics. Local restaurants are also encouraged to sign up for a booth.  Your participation is encouraged!

This is a terrific opportunity for folks from all the surrounding neighborhoods to come out and play.  Eat, shop, get to know and support each other.  The market will feature the basics at first, and grow and grow from there.  With community participation, this terrific event will be able to generate substantial support for our schools.

I encourage you to become a market sponsor, be a local expert, a loyal customer and market enthusiast!!  Come out and buy some "Spirit Wear", sponsor a few laps for a school jog a thon, or buy tickets for a carnival.  Send your kid down the street to pick up a dozen eggs...(how cool it that?)  Or, just sip on a cup of joe while playing chess with a neighbor and the kids can run around on the grass.

It's all about sustainability, environmental stewardship, community building and civic engagement!

Plus, it's a wonderful way to teach our kids while we raise precious funds for our local schools!  If you would like to be involved, would like to host or sponsor a class or demonstration, please contact Market Manager Kelli Johnson at 562-528-6259 or via eMail at Info@LongBeachSundayMarket.com.  For more information, please visit our website at http://LongBeachSundayMarket.com.

I want to thank Kelli Johnson for her hard work and dedication to establishing the market.  Please join us this weekend for the launch and every Sunday in a family friendly and secure environment on the playground!  Walk, wagon, and bike over...What could be more fun for the whole family?

Kindest Regards,
Councilwoman Tonia Reyes Uranga
