Friends,
In
these tough times, the focus for local governments must be how we can
do more with less. This past Tuesday, the City Council approved my proposal to establish a joint use committee consisting of members of the Long Beach
City Council and the Long Beach Unified School District. I want to
thank my colleagues for supporting the item, LBUSD, and particularly the
Long Beach Parks and Recreation Commission for their input on how we
can better work together.
My
hope is that by coming together, we can discuss proposals of how we can
jointly serve our respective missions--providing a first-class
education to Long Beach students and excellent services to our
residents. For example, I look forward to talking with the School
District on how we can open the pool at Cabrillo High School to the
community, and how we might be able to offer LBUSD students
opportunities to learn about the environment by visiting the native plants and wildlife at the California Gardens
property. I am confident that, by working together to improve services
for students and residents alike, we can accomplish things together
that would be impossible on our own.
