About our association

OUR GOALS

To exercise, promote and protect the rights, privileges and interests of our members and other residents of Queens, particularly within the boundaries of the West Flushing Civic Association. To foster an awareness and interest in the civic affairs of the community. To develop responsible and participatory citizenship. To inquire into, and seek remedies for, civic abuses. To secure more openness, honesty and democracy in government, and to be advocates for social and economic justice in society. To support for elected office those candidates who pledge to carry out these reforms, and whose past performance lends credibility to such pledges.

OUR ACHIEVEMENTS

Prevented construction of a Mobil MiniMart on contaminated soil on Elder Avenue and Main Street.

Prevented a Hong Kong Supermarket from being built near homes on Sanford and Maple Avenues.

Successfully petitioned the city to change Sanford and Maple Avenues into one-way streets, enhancing pedestrian safety and traffic flow.

OUR SPECIFIC CONCERNS

Downtown Flushing needs to be transformed from the smelly, filthy mess that it is today into a hospitable place for people to enjoy. Businesses can thrive without being inconsiderate slobs. Our community board and elected officials have failed to provide adequate services and effective enforcement for our community.

Our health is under siege from noise and air pollution, from aircraft, trucks and buses, and from improper disposal of wastes.

Our neighborhoods are threatened by greedy developers who seek to build residential or commercial buildings that are oversized or inappropriate, creating severe impacts and destroying our neighborhoods.
