My name is Joy Tapia and I am the current Chair for the West Ochoa Neighborhood Association.

We were formed over 2 years ago to fight against and close a drug house at 28 west 25th street. There are 5 separate apartments there and 3 out of the 5 were rented to drug dealers and /or prostitutes.

We are now in the process of getting a grant for "decomposed crushed granite" sidewalk areas and some trees and/or boulders for our wide sidewalk areas. Our kids have to walk in the streets because of needles, rocks and broken liquor bottles in this area.

Another battle we face here and in the surrounding neighborhoods is the application for more liquor stores calling themselves "Markets"

About our association

West Ochoa Neighborhood is located on the Southside of Tucson. Our boundaries are as follows:

South side of W. 22nd. Street to the South Tucson border.
East side of S. 6th. Ave.to the east side of the I-10 freeway. We have approximately 145 households in our Association.

We were formed to fight Drug Dealing , Prostitution, and the homeless situation in and around our neighborhood.

2 years ago we started as a Neighborhood Watch and with the help of the Ward V Council office and Councilman Steve Leal and his staff, we were able to become a registered Neighborhood Association within 1 month.

We have accomplished several projects since forming 2 years ago this month.

We have had a Neighborhood Summer Fiesta, cleaned up a couple of our streets and alleys, and had a "National Night Out " last year. Now we are working toward getting a grant for some more improvements in the neighborhood. Mainly what is needed desperately are street lights on the West side of South 6th. Ave. There have NEVER been any for some reason in our 3 blocks from 22-25th.

UPDATE/1/12/2000
The Street Light Problem will be handled when the South 6th Beautification is finished. More pedestrian friendly has been one of the main objectives.
