West Plaza is a collection of homes built mainly in the 50s, 60s, and 70s. At one time, the homes sat on the northwest edge of the Phoenix metro area, but with the area's population more than tripling over the last 50 years, West Plaza now sits in the heart of the region. Several square miles of northwest Phoenix were developed using the name "West Plaza" in some way or another. However, the focus of this website is to unite neighbors in the area bordered by Glendale, Bethany Home, 35th, and 43rd Avenues. If there is interest from surrounding neighborhoods, this website can incorporate information about what's going on there as well.
West Plaza offers a wide selection of housing styles. Most noticeable are the hundreds of red brick and concrete block homes that sit among green lawns and mature trees. Rental housing can be found in the northwestern portion of the neighborhood (43rd Ave & Glendale), in the Cinnabarr Apartments and other, smaller complexes. The Casa Domani condominiums are tucked away in the northeast corner of the neighborhood (35th Ave & Glendale), offering a relaxed urban lifestyle, within walking distance to stores, restaurants, offices, and night life. The quarter-square mile La Pradera Park (39th Ave & Glendale) offers an abundance of recreational choices for area residents. The diversity of housing options has made for a diverse population as well.
The Great Recession that began in 2007 has taken its toll on West Plaza. Property values had risen tremendously during the five years leading up to that, but the boom suddenly turned to bust. A wave of foreclosures swept across the area, and continues to hold down property values. West Plaza hasn't been hit quite as hard as many other areas west of I-17. The rambling, well-constructed ranch style homes conveniently located between Metrocenter and Grand Canyon University are still attractive to many people. Nearby shopping districts are seeing new vitality. The once struggling center at 35th Ave & Bethany Home has now been transformed into Bethany Towne Center, with dozens of stores and restaurants (See the above photo). A new Ranch Market has revitalized Winsor Square at 35th Ave & Glendale.
This website is to be used as a tool to share information - good and bad - about what is going on in West Plaza, and to come up with new ideas for improving our neighborhood.
