Moped vendors in Waikiki are taking advantage and disregarding the safety factors of the tourists. Many of the moped rental vendors are removing the speed restrictors on the mopeds and some are even modifying to go even faster, which is very dangerous for anyone renting. Yet they just simply do not care about the risks. At the same time there are no regulations like renting a car. No regulations exist for moped renting business. Mopeds are treated as same as a bicycle so whenever they get a ticket, it's ignored. They just simply do not pay. Police in Waikiki know that many mopeds being rented are illegal, yet they don't do anything about them since there are no regulations they can use to enforce. Vendors renting mopeds are making lots of money but the city and county isn't collecting any taxes or fees on it. Furthermore, there are so many moped accidents but it is all being ignored. Many of the moped renting vendors are operating in builing corners, by garbage dumps, and etc. They are just operating from any location in Waikiki that they can although it isn't safe to do. Why isn't the law makers doing anything about the moped renting business? Why not collect some taxes and make some rules and regulations to make it more safe? All business should have some sort of insurance to cover the accidents, especially the moped rentals but they don't, as soon as they removed the speed restrictors and especially after modifying, no commercial insurance will cover. So how do they do it? The vendors get the minimum insurance coverage, which they know that it won't cover any accidents, and give a copy to their landlords so that they could rent the space. Thereafter, the tourist become the victims for every accident, which they don't have the time to complain nor do they know anything about the law to realize that their mopends rentals were illegal. While the honolulu city and county is allowing all this to happen, can the Waikiki neighborhood board do anything to improve this situation? I am sure that you are very familiar with the moped rental problems here in Waikiki, so can you think of some way to improve this situation to make it more safe for the tourist coming to Hawaii?
