So in your snobbish opinion...''upper class'' people (i.e. those who live in Wash Park) must be shielded from the realities of modern society but those low class neighborhoods (not named) should live next to jails etc? The elitism is no solution to this problem.

BANANA / NIMBY

I like to remind myself of the human-nature response that typically comes up when a jail, halfway house, home for battered women, hazardous waste disposal facility, check cashing place, pawn shop, and many other functions are mentioned.

I think it is frequently referred to as BANANA / NIMBY. That is: Build Absolutely Nothing Anywhere Near Anyone and Not In My Backyard.

Having said that, if there were a place for me to vote, I suppose I'd think a Starbucks and a Gap seems like the right thing for that location, rather than a jail.
