WASHINGTON PARK CIVIC ASSOCIATION INC
P O Box 1233
Fort Lauderdale, FL 33311
October 13, 2005
The meeting opened at 7:10 with everyone repeating the 23rd psalm. The minutes were approved and seconded. We welcomed resident Susan Monroe and Betty Jenkins from community development. We also welcomed Captain Henson from fire station 14 and two firemen were in attendance.
Lt. Fleming: There was 1 house burglary on NW 7th ST and a robbery on NW 7th ST. A couple of stolen cars were dropped off in the neighborhood. Ms. Spence-Brown advised the Lt. that a lot of teens are hanging out on the corner of NW 7th CT and NW 28 TER. He advised us if they live in the neighborhood there isn't much that he can do. Ms. Spence-Brown asked fire rescue how to go about getting smoke detectors for residents that doesn't have any. He will check and get back with us.
Betty Jenkins from community development was here to address our questions regarding funding for the redevelopment program. She advised us that some of her staff has relocated and her number is (954) 765-5332 or (954) 765-5311. We've been awarded $68,343.00 for beautification and minor home repairs. The maximum per family is $10, 000.00. If your bid exceeds $10,000 you can either:
1) Delete some options to bring the total down to 10,000
2) Pay the difference
3) Get a loan from their program that will loan you the difference
The contact person will be Ruby Ellington. Mr. Marshall asked if Ms. Jenkins knew the income levels to qualify. She said that information has been provided to our president, but she did give us an example. Ms. Sumlin asked if there is a separate entity for emergency roof repair. She said no, but there is one under the ship program. If you received money from a program in the past, there is a waiting period to re-apply, she thinks its 3 years but she isn't sure. Hurricane shutters would fall under this grant. A resident asked if there is a list of repairs that is available to be selected and she said yes, and they were read at our last meeting.
Joy from code enforcement: she says some residents are encouraging their friends and family members that it is OK to park in our neighborhood. Commercial vehicles are not allowed to park in the area. One resident has a neighbor with overgrowth on the lot and won't cut it. She has already reported it and fines are accumulating. Ms. Spence-Brown advised Joy that the residents that live along Sistrunk near the fence are getting rats because the grass isn't being cut. She also advised Joy that we need to get sprayed for mosquitoes.
Neighborhood Enhancement: No report - they did not meet
Ms. Giles and the neighborhood survey - Ms. Smith will be the chairperson of the telephone tree, Mr. Franklin is still on our sick list.
The election for new board members will be held January. Mrs. Smith made a motion that dues collected tonight will be given to Mr. Franklin and the motion was seconded. Ms. Porter then restated the motion because some residents have pre-paid for the year and they wanted to be included.
Treasurer report: Beginning balance: $320.00
Dues Collected: $225.00
Balance: $545.00
