The City of Des Moines Engineering Department will be closing the Grand Avenue Bridge over Walnut Creek at 63rd Street to all traffic on MONDAY, MARCH 25th and it will remain closed until September for bridge replacement. Vehicles will still be able to travel north and south on 63rd Street. They will not be able to travel east or west across the Grand Avenue Bridge. All the businesses on Grand Avenue will be open and have vehicular access. 

In September, three (3) lanes of traffic will be restored on the bridge while the contractor continues to complete the reconstruction. All five (5) lanes of traffic should be open in November. It is likely that additional construction activities will carry over to the spring of 2014, but the work should be minor.

Message boards will be in place on Grand Avenue to remind motorists of the upcoming construction and to look for alternate routes. The detour route will utilize 63rd Street, University Avenue, and 56th Street. The truck detour route will use 63rd Street, University Avenue, and 42nd Street.
