Stonehaven, Queens Grant, and Rama Woods

While we are all "separate" neighborhoods we are all connected by our streets so the boundaries are soft ones. Each area was built at different times and by different builders.
A LITTLE HISTORY

At one time, the land on which Stonehaven now sits was known for gold mining. Many gold mine shafts were located in the Rama and Sardis Road area as well. People came from far and near in the hopes of striking it rich. The land changed hands several times after the creation of Mecklenburg County in 1763. One of its owners, the Bass family built their home where the stone entrance of Olde Stonehaven stands now. They eventually sold a little over 50 acres, which was developed and divided into approximately 70 lots in the 1950’s by the McArn and Gwynn Company. Stonehaven, aptly named for the abundant stone deposits and beautiful trees in the area, has been home to generations of Charlotteans since that time. Many children who grew up in Stonehaven and played in its woods, have married, started families, and come back “home.” Today it truly is a haven, filled with walkers and joggers, young and old, pushing strollers and exercising their dogs.

Over the years Stonehaven’s boundaries have expanded with lovely homes built by such
noted builders as John Crosland Sr., Allen Tate, William Trotter and John Thomasson. Mr. Thomasson’s son, Jim finished out the subdivision in the 80’s and early 90’s .

Queen’s Grant and Rama Woods, lovely communities contiguous to Stonehaven sprang up in the 60’s.
This area, once considered the outskirts of Charlotte was named for Queen Charlotte; Crown Court, one of its streets, derives its name from Crown Grant, to which this land is referred in Mecklenburg County’s deed books. Across from the subdivision’s entrance and still standing today is the one room schoolhouse attended by the children in Rama, North Carolina.

Rama used to be a town of its own until the city of Charlotte absorbed it.Ram Road Elementary and Rama Swim and Racquet Club are both 40+ years old!

Another parcel of land bordering Stonehaven was developed by the Ryan Company in the 1980’s and named Waverly Hall. This location, once known as Sardis, North Carolina, is across the street from Sardis Presbyterian Church which was organized in 1790. Nearby also is a natural spring, which provided water and a gathering place for its parishioners for church picnics and activities.

Stonehaven, Queens Grant, and Rama Woods

Although we don't have a neighborhood association we do have an active Community Watch. The Community watch program works via email and keeps you up to date about crime and concerns. We also have an annual dinner and meeting which is usually held in August or September and is a great way to meet each other. If you would like to be added to the email list please contact Lindalee Davis at lindalee@carolina.rr.com and she will take care of it. There is absolutely nothing to "join", rather you start benefiting immediately, you'll be able to connect with the neighborhood.

Neighborhood Events

Rama Swim and Racquet Club hosts two neighborhood events. One is an Easter Egg Hunt and the other is a 4th of July Parade. Look for signs that are posted around the neighborhood for details or ask a member of the pool for an update or go their website to check the dates.

Anybody can host a street party or even a block party if they would like. If you would like to officially block the streets off, just make sure to get the permit for a block party, which is easy to do.Contact 311 by phone, which is the city information line for details.
