Neighborhood Meeting

Westleigh Neighborhood Association

Tuesday, February 24, 2009 at 6:30 p.m.

at Vegas Verdes Elementary School

4000 El Parque Ave

Topics:

  • $ Meet our New Neighborhood Planner
  • $ Grant Fund
  • $ New Officer Nominees

Agenda

  • $ Welcome and Introductions. Present were Ann Kilponen, Bob Coyle - Rep Svc, Dana- Secretary and 14 attendees.
  • $ Not on the agenda but Jan's Future Topic, Republic Service's Bob Coyle was present at the meeting to talk about the "recycling pilot program". Rep Svc will provide for free a single recycle bin (blue lid) and a single trash bin (black lid) picked up once/week for a year (the pilot program). They come in 3 sizes: 96, 65, and 35 gallons and are designed to be picked up in a specially designed side-lift truck usually in front of the home (hence wither it will work in the alley). There will be two trucks used, one for recycling and one for trash. The recycle bin gets everything except glass. Glass will be trash. The entire neighborhood would have to participate. They only way Westleigh would participate if pick-up would remain in the alleys since no one wanted to lug trash to the front. Bob Coyle said he would get the chance within the next couple of days to see if alley pick-up would be possible. If not, we stop. If yes, a survey would have to go out and the responses tabulated to determine if we go through with it. It has been found to increase recycling. Ex: Nellis from 2% to 25%.
  • $ Anne had the chance to introduce herself. She's a straight shooter and will tell like it is. She made everyone comfortable and explained it will take time for her to get up to speed but aware of some issues she's working on.
  • $ The Grant fund was tabled per the consensus of those at the meeting since it would be premature to do anything along the perimeter until Valley View widening project is done. No one liked the Bulletin Board idea since it would only be an attraction for taggers and who would look at it anyway.
  • $ No one volunteered to be an Officer. They said to keep us and move it to the 2nd Thursday for Tiffany. Tiffany's neighbor, Tina, would not be able to make it unless it was changed to Wednesday. I said we would ask for New Officers again in March and won't change to the 2nd Thursday until September since we only have 2 more meetings anyway.

Other Business:

  • $ Anne is going to look into the "Porch". It maybe something that won't exist with budgetary constraints, OT, etc. There's also talk of delivering the "Porch" on Friday and picking it up Monday. As far as just providing tables and chairs, she wasn't sure if this was a viable option.
  • $ Westleigh NA received a "Certificate of Appreciation" from City of Las Vegas.
  • $ Future meeting - "Adopt-a-block" program

            Handouts:

  • Two Marketing Flyers of when Westleigh Homes went up for sale
  • The "rough draft" of the Neighborhood Partners Fund application for community improvement via a bulletin board and potential sources.
