10/3/99 Broomfield Problem

Posted in: Country Side
I''m Concerned

In Spring of 98 - BF City Council, as private citizens, presented info to the House and Senate Local Government and Appropriations Committees to convince them to put the City County issue on the 98 ballot. The information that these council members presented was riddled with half truths and inaccuracies. The result is history.

I am told, that when a Broomfield citizen wrote a letter to the Secretary of State concerned about the lies that had been told - the SS response was (in essence) it''s not illegal to lie to these committees.

If that''s true - is it also not illegal to lie in the upcoming re-hearing. Also, will whoever presides over this rehearing be informed enough about the pertanent facts to see through false info and logic when it is presented by that BFCC (my favorite Stoval, probably). Will they know that Broomfield means to use that jail no matter what happens? Will they know that these things are funded through COPs and that the city has no real obligation to repay them?

I''m concerned that if this process does not require that information provided be true.... WHAT IS THE POINT.... just let them write whatever they want as a fiscal impact. (I say this facetiously)

I am not accusing your group of whining about the jail, although your repeal action initially started because of it. Had there not
been a jail . .. well, you know the rest better than I do.

I do not mean to keep putting forth a "What's in it for me" theme. What I continue to "harp" on is the fact that Broomfield being
a city, or a city and County will not improve the "community, the state or the world" . The Status is not the issue. Even if you
expose all of the bad things about the county issue, the issue on election day will still be whether BF should become a county -- not
whether BF should be punished for the WAY it became a county. Does your ballot question state: Should the Citizens and Leaders
of Broomfield be Punished for Ethical Improprieties? Probably not. It probably just states, "Should Broomfield's County Status be
Repealed?"

If there were improprieties by city leaders, then I agree there should be repercussions. County Status is not a repercussion.
Legal action is, or a recall of the people who actually committed the ethical breeches.

I never said BR Anon was leading you down a false path. I only meant that BR Anon's path is in Broomfield, yours is in
Westminster. Although you all have a community spirit, there are political boundaries and only so much you can do to change the
behavior of your neighbors' representatives.

Again, if you are not acting out of spite or revenge, then you will realize that repealing the Status of Broomfield will not result in
any Behavioral changes. Do you think if you're successful, any lessons will be learned if the same people are still in leadership
roles? Change the leadership -- address the problem at its source. This is where I am suggesting you put your energy and effort.
And start in your own political jurisdiction. You will probably get a lot more support. You'll have mine anyway.

Chin up, shoulders back, smile on that face. Your confidence will always be challenged up to and possibly after this election. There are people who will say it's all legal, there are people who will slam the door in your face on the petition. The question here, is legal always ethical? Yeah, the question about the oath is relevant; takes the sting out of a lawsuit; but it is not the question of the day. The question is will ethical be discarded for legal challenges. If so, do we need a law about ethics to make ethics justifiable? My spiritual leader tells me this is not so; the struggle will always be for the masses; and through persistence, the masses will win; but not without struggle. When I have roadblocks in my life; this is where I go for help; believe me, it was not my decision alone to find this board. Never loose your confidence; and never loose what is guiding you; the search for truth.
And, if you have a spiritual leader, call for assistance and guidance; and thank him/her for bringing you to the point of involvement.

Hey, I Voted, Too

You must remember that for Broomfield to become a county, the whole state of Colorado had to approve. I don't necessarily think this was right, but it is/was law. I do think it is/was appropriate for all affected counties to vote on the matter (Boulder, Jefferson, Adams, Weld). In either case - I would be an affected voter. This isn't quite like we are fighting for some similar wrong done in Juno Alaska.

We WERE the voting public that was lied to. We WERE the voting public that was not told of how WE would be affected by Broomfield becoming a county. (I believe BFCC and WestyCC BOTH held back the Jail siting info from us at the time of the election).

If Broomfield citizens don't care or believe that they were lied to, then so be it - let them say that at the poles. But I and the rest of the State voted in that election as well - we have as much right to care about that election as any Broomfield resident - it was our vote that was manipulated.
