The Willard Neighborhood Association is a volunteer organization dedicated to the principle of improving the neighborhood. We strive to bring all ages and all political affiliations together to work on projects that affect all of us.
The Steering Committee meets the 4th Thursday each month at Mudrakers Cafe on the corner of Stuart and Telegraph. The meetings begin at 7pm and all neighbors are encouraged to attend. The agendas will be posted in the Community Pages on this website prior to each meeting so you can see what issues are going to be addressed.
Our most visable projects are those that involve the clean up and restoration of Willard Park, located in the center of the neighborhood. Our Public Works committee has also sponsored the annual Welcome to Our Neighborhood Street Faire that takes place the weekend before UC classes begin.
Clearly there is crime in our neighborhood. A look at the crime maps at the Berkeley Police Department show that the Willard neighborhood is unduly impacted by property crime. The area that abuts People's Park is especially hard hit with many quality of life crimes as well as property crimes.
Transporation issues are also important to the neighborhood. We have been active for a number of years attempting to improve public transit on Telegraph. We oppose the implementation of Bus Rapid Transit because of its removal of mixed use traffic lanes and its $400 million price tag. We support an expansion of Rapid Bus to include many of the special features of BRT that can be implemented without massive infrastructure construction.
Land Use issues, though not as energizing as other issues, are things that will affect the neighborhood long after some of the more transitory issues have died away. We want to make sure that new development improves the quaility of life here in the neighborhood.

We will attempt to strengthen community, to promote safety and quality of life, and to facilitate neighbors’ pursuit of other common interests.
Means for doing so shall include:
• Monitoring, distributing information, and encouraging discussion about neighborhood conditions;
• Providing a forum for identifying issues of common interest, airing various points of view on them, and developing options to solve problems;
• Serving as a neighborhood voice and recognized channel of communication with City staff, elected officials, and other institutions and groups impacting the neighborhood; and
• Encouraging neighbor awareness of and participation in local electoral processes (though not endorsing any candidates)
