Wilshire Square dates back to about 1920 when the land was subdivided into lots for sale. Full scale housing development began in 1922. Between 1922 and 1931 over 320 homes were built. By 1950, there were only 18 homesites left. Over 50% of the homes in present day Wilshire Square date from before 1936.
There are three main architectural styles of housing in Wilshire Square - Spanish, Tudor and California Ranch. There are a smattering of other homes that make up the 600 plus homes in the Square.
Most of the homes have sturdy lath and plaster construction, crown molded ceilings, hardwood floors, curved archways, rich wood moldings and even an occasional basement.
The Wilshire Square Neighborhood Asssociation was formed in January of 1987 with the assistance and support of the city. Membership is without cost and meetings are held the first wednesday of every month. Annual neighborhood events often include an Easter brunch, summer concert, and a tea and art show.
