A WORD FROM THE STREET!

We have been asked by several residents, our postal carrier and a school bus driver to talk to the residents of Windhurst Acres about on-street parking.

Although there is no St. Matthews ordinance restricting street-side parking, the Windhurst Acres Neighborhood Association would like to ask all residents to be sensitive to other residents and service providers. On-street parking is not a right but is rather a privilege that the City of St. Matthews has allowed over the years due to the way the city was originally built (to accommodate the original mode of transportation - buggies!). However, some residents and/or guests have abused the practice of parking on the street for more than a couple of hours at a time. This practice is not only unattractive, but is very dangerous at times when residents are trying to maneuver around parked vehicles when another car is coming.

The Windhurst Acres Neighborhood Association is asking that everyone be more conscientious of the impact that on-street parking has on the quality of life and safety of our neighbors. Your safety is our concern; therefore, we need each of you to help us keep our neighborhood safe and beautiful. Your cooperation is appreciated!

Focus of Board for 2003

Greetings?… Spring is upon us and we look forward to blue skies, new growth on our trees, and the smell of fresh cut grass. With that in mind the board recently met to discuss our new start for 2003 and to determine our direction for the upcoming year. Since we are a ?“Neighborhood Association?” and not a city we decided to focus on those things that we can have an impact on. There are three areas that we will focus on in 2003:
1. Communication
2. Beautification
3. Security
Each of our projects will address one of the above areas and hopefully by keeping focused we can adequately address all three in 2003. Several of our projects (see related stories) have already seen some nice development.
We look forward to serving you this year and in improving the neighborhood we share. Please consider becoming a member of the association, attending a meeting, helping with a project, or introducing yourself to the ?“new?” neighbor. Any-thing we do will help our neighborhood be a better place to live. Thank You?… Gene Baker.

Westport Road Clean Up

During the first association board meeting in January everyone agreed that the easements along Westport Road are in dire need of a make over. Having tried to clean the area up before many options were discussed on how to attack the project. Since the Commonwealth of Kentucky owns the property it was decided to once again contact our legislators to see if we could get some help. During his campaign Ken Fleming, Metro Council Representative for this area, had attended one of Windhursts Acres general meetings and we felt he may be able to help. Shortly after contacting him, he along with several State and local department representatives visited the neighborhood to view the situation. One State representative agreed to have the trees along Westport Road evaluated and to remove any damaged or diseased trees. After examining the 47 trees 17 have been identified as diseased or damaged beyond repair. These 17 trees will be removed sometime by mid April 2003. As for the remaining trees, and clean up of the easement the Board has decided to schedule a neighborhood clean up day. Volunteers from the neighborhood will be asked to help trim the trees and clean up the easement. If you would be interested in helping with this project please contact one of the board members. The first work date has been scheduled for April 26 (see announcement below).

Winhurst Acres is Now Online!

Our neighborhood now has a Web site. Our new Web site includes information about Windhurst Acres, an online newsletter, a list of the local schools in our neighborhood, and community pages about issues and events that affect us at home. Links to city government officials and services, including police, make it a great communication channel. The new Metro Government changes are forthcoming.

Our New Web site is not just an information source, but also a place for all neighbors to be connected on the Internet. Want to tell people about an upcoming meeting, garage sale, or lost pet? Then post a notice in the ?“Community Calendar?”. Want your own personal Web page? Then create one in the ?“Meet your Neighbors?” section and tell people about yourself, your family, your hobbies, or your other interests. Concerned about a neighborhood issue? Talk to your neighbors - solicit new viewpoints. Go to the ?“Talk About It?” section and create a new discussion.

This is out Web site and it is easy to use. You don?’t need any special computer skills to post information on the site. Simply fill out the forms and the information is posted! All you need is an Internet connection. Everything is in an extremely user friendly format. So check it OUT!

Westport Road Clean Up

(Meet at entrance way at Wesport Road and Fenley )
