Press Release
Major John Deeds, of the Office of Judicial Marshals, is this year’s recipient of the Roy Rice award. This award is presented annually to that
person, group, or organization that has made an outstanding contribution to the safety and wellbeing of the employees of the Judicial Branch and those
persons who participate in court activities. Major Deeds has been in a leadership role in the Court Security program since the early 1990’s. The award
was presented during a gathering of Deputy Marshals and Deputy Sheriffs at the Criminal Justice Academy in Vassalboro. Chief Justice Leigh Saufley made
the presentation. Trial Court Chiefs Thomas Humphrey, of the Superior Court, and Ann Murray, of the District Court, along with Marshal Michael Coty were
in attendance.
Chief Justice Saufley noted that the nomination materials pointed out that John has always exceeded expectations. When someone within the Judicial
Family suffers a loss or a setback he goes out of his way to offer assistance. He frequently points out individuals who are deserving of recognition and
therefore it is fitting that he be the recipient of recognition for his many efforts throughout years.
The area of Court Security is one that has been identified as being in need of additional resources. The court system is able to succeed without
sufficient staffing because of the efforts of John Deeds and those who emulate his approach to providing safety in the courthouses.
There are few in the Judicial Branch who do not know and respect Major John Deeds for his dedication and commitment to keeping them safe. He
represents the best qualities of the Marshal program as were evidenced by the late Roy Rice and therefore it is fitting that he be the recipient of this
award.
Major Deeds lives in Windsor, Maine.
