Let's make Mission Viejo great!

No need to settle

When I wrote about Highlands Ranch and Vail, I was being sarcastic about them, not praising them. I have a very large family, several of which live in both locations, and all of them regret moving into such rigid neighborhoods. They pay out the ears for their dues, yet they can't even put out a birdbath for fear of being ostracized and taken to court over their infraction. (It cost my dad over $5000 for putting out that birdbath in the backyard - while their neighbors NEVER picked up the dogs' feces, and stank up the neighborhood, not to mention, a major health code violation, the HOA and city did nothing about the feces -- doesn't make sense at all).

Here you're FREE to do pretty much as you please as our covenants ALLOW a large selection to choose from.

I AM PROUD of our neighborhood, and because we work TOGETHER on my street (we ALL know each other, we all talk with each other and watch out for one another-- 21 households in all), we keep crime down and property values up. We're all diverse in nationalities, religion, politics and opinions. When we don't agree, we mediate for each other.

We take responsibility and pride for our area. There's nothing we couldn't ask of each other.

We don't NEED (and ''we'' don't WANT) the dues for management or patrols. We do JUST FINE with what we have. Why do other people have problems? BECAUSE you won't work TOGETHER. Put aside your differences, allow others to think and act the way THEY deem appropriate, don't elevate yourself as the all seeing and all knowing AS YOU DON'T LIVE THEIR LIVES and don't want people dictating to you.

Mind your own business and watch out for and be kind to each other.

Diversity in thinking is ok

I agree on many points in your letter, and it certainly sounds like you are a proud Mission resident...of which we need more. It sounds like we disagree about how dues should be spent, but otherwise value the same things in a neighborhood, and are happy with the current level of covenants we have.

Your block sounds terrific, and thankfully so is mine. But there are areas within Mission that don't work as well together, and need more assistance. Some are more transitional, and some face different traffic/crime/communication issues. I personally felt good about the additional security patrol we had, and wish we wouldn't have had to sacrifice it.
We probably need to ''agree to disagree'' about that, and that's ok...that's what diversity is all about.
