Town of Braintree

Teacher's Raises

Posted in: Braintree
The SC has lost all their brains! In a time of economic strife they want to give the teachers a four year contract. They should be offering them a one year contract, then see how the economy is after that.
I hope they have written in some protection for the taxpayers and students in this contract. For example if there is another cut in local aid we can adjust the raises accordingly, because if they haven't we could be looking at a complete devistation of our school system, might as well move to Boston because the class sizes are going to sky rocket in Braintree.

Here's the Story

The SC has the $$ for the first year 1% from a few different sources. The negotiations went on for a year...don't you think they tried every way to get a 0% in year one? You can complain all day long about what should or shouldn't be offered, but that doesn't mean the teachers would accept it. So what will it be, continue to say no raises to the teachers and continue with work stoppages? Or is it better to come to an agreement which is certainly no budget breaker, at 10% over 4 years? And make no mistake, the other unions in town would will never accept a 0%...don't be shocked if those contracts drag on for another year or so and then settle higher than the teachers deal.

Pieces are missing

from your story. If we can only raise $1.2 Million in taxes each year and a 1% raise is equal to a half a million dollars, how can we afford 2 1/2% increases over the next four years? And to suggest that the school committee was committed to a zero percent increase is totally false.
I calculate that at the end of 4 years the town would pay out around 6 Million dollars and over that same 4 years we would get about 4 1/2 million dollars in taxes to pay for this increase.
It doesn't take a lot of math skills to realize that if you are spending more money that you are bringing in, you are going to have a deficit sooner or later. In this case it is year 4. It doesn't matter if your a municipality like Braintree or a scam artist like that guy Bleidt. Robbing Peter to pay Paul catches up to you sooner or later.

I voted against the Overrides because our elected officials continue to spend our taxpayer's dollars irresponsibly. They have us buffaloed into thinking the problem is with State Aid when it's actually with the elected officials. Is this how they run their personal finances? I certainly hope not for their sake. And for these cronies to suggest that I need to ''step up to the plate'' makes my blood boil.

I am glad to hear that the FinCom is finally seeing the true colors of the School department: take care of our own and let everyone else fight for what's left over. Town Meeting needs to send a message that is loud and clear to these imbeciles and demand that we fix what's wrong with our finances, not continue down the road that got us here in the first place.
