Okay, not a barracks, but a ''bedroom filled with what, fifteen or twenty beds'' to bunk in over night. Quiet nights, a good night sleep before going off to ''day job'' as most firefighters moonlight (their choice) but police scour the town over night and don't bunk in. Firefighters do their job when called to do so - THAT'S WHY WE PAY THEM!! It's when they aren't doing anything productive such as sitting down for gourmet meal in the firehouse dining room or watching videos, playing pool, watching the game or favorite TV shows or even sleeping is WHAT THE TOWN PAYS THEM FOR AS WELL. Considering the amount of time they are out rescuing, fighting fires, responding to distress calls versus hunkered in the firehouse, THE TOWN PAYS THEM HANDSOMELY DURING THE LULLS AND THE LULLS AMOUNT TO FAR MORE TIME PAID THAN FIGHTING FIRES ETC. At least, the police are cruising looking for criminals, responding to same calls as fire, intervening in police matters etc 24/7. Firefighters cannot make that claim. When a police officer is chasing a criminal, I find it no more or less stressful or dangerous than a firefighter climbing a ladder to extinguish a fire or hoisting a gurney into an ambulance! Get a Life, Ret. Lt. Cox. There are significant differences between Police and Fire, but both are paid similarly. Police must take exams, firefighters take zip exams and retire usually as Deputies?
