I'd like to start out with some

In January 2003, when his campaign was still young enough that Kerry would actually sit down with reporters in a relaxed setting, he met for breakfast at the Holiday Inn in Dubuque, Iowa.

''I'd like to start out with some green tea,'' Kerry told the waitress, who stared at him for a moment before responding, ''We have Lipton's.''

Lipton's would be fine, Kerry said, but the memory stayed.

''There were many green tea instances, There's a very large disconnect between the Washington politicians and most of America and how they live. Bush was able to bridge that gap, and Kerry was not.''

If the Democrats hope to regain the White House, she said, they will have to close the green tea gap.

''There's some X-factor that says, 'This guy gets me, I like this guy,' '' she said. Bill Clinton had it, and so did Jimmy Carter.

Her speech was billed as a reflection on the campaign, but Crowley, who has covered every presidential election since 1976, offered a correction.

''We journalists call it a postmortem,'' she said, and proceeded to autopsy the election with a motley offering of anecdotes, insights and informed speculation.

Donald Rumseld will retire, she predicted, probably within the next year, but not immediately.

Sen. John McCain, R.-Ariz., won't run in 2008, she said, and it wouldn't surprise her if Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, D-N.Y., didn't either.

Asked about Teresa Heinz Kerry, Crowley got a laugh when she described her as ''the happiest person at his concession speech.''

Asked about the public's trust, or distrust, of the news media.

''They trust the media they watch,'' she said. ''Democrats trust The New YorkTimes and Republicans trust Fox News.''
