Presidents Report

Dear Neighbors,

This month is very important to every citizen in the city. On March 27th we elect five MEMBERS FOR CITY COUNCIL and a MAYOR. We all need do what we can to get everyone out to vote. The candidates have made themselves available to the public, through the many candidate forms this month, and on the 27th you must decide who will lead the city for the next 4 years. Also, Campbell Park Neighborhood Association is requesting that you vote FOR the Charter Referendum on school playgrounds, which will affect their neighborhood. At a recent CONA Board Meeting we voted unanimously to support this amendment for the KIDS of this area.

At the CONA Board Meeting, on March 21st we will take a vote on the idea of cameras recording people running red lights at intersections. We have discussed this issue at two other meetings and hope this has given everyone enough time to take it back to their neighborhoods. We can all agree our city doesn't need the recognition of being one of the top 5 Metro-areas for drivers running red lights. This problem causes a lot of accidents and deaths. It?’s time to put a stop to this problem.

The area?’s water problem is getting worse. A lot of neighborhoods have been discussing this issue on the Internet. The neighborhoods of St. Petersburg conserve water better than any other community in the Tampa Bay Area. The problem is we are pumping more water from the aquifer than it can supply. We still don't have the COMMON SENSE to do anything about it. We raise the price of water to reduce consumption, but build more shopping centers and houses. Maybe, we should start looking at taking care of the current population. It?’s unfortunate that nothing will happen until the water stops coming out of the faucet. The residents of California didn't think they had a problem with energy until the lights were turned off. This problem can?’t be fixed over night. It will take many years and many inches of rain to fill the aquifer, we better do something now, because tomorrow will to be LATE.

Mayor Ficsher is retiring and we all will miss him. One of his legacies will be in 8 to 10 years when all of the many trees that he has planted have grown. What a beautiful sight that will be. See you on March 21st.

Your Neighbor, Jim Biggerstaff
