President’s Message

HAPPY NEW YEAR CANDLELIGHT! A new year often brings with it resolutions and changes. Candlelight has already been through some changes with more to come. In January we elected new officers and we have already begun to make our resolutions on what we would like to see happen this year. One project we are working on is to beautify the three grass islands in the front of the subdivision on Afterglow. We are also planning a neighborhood wide yard sale in May.

The neighborhood association is here to listen to you and to make this a better place to live for all of us. If you have a suggestion on something you would like to see get done or if you would like to be involved in a project please let us know. I sincerely hope that you will attend our next meeting on March 2nd at 7 PM at Lassiter Middle School. Christine Smith, President

Grant/Beautification Project on Track

Metro United Way, with matching funds from Councilman Ron Weston, has given Candlelight a $2,500 grant to beautify the three grass islands on Afterglow Drive. This will give us the opportunity to develop a signature entrance into Candlelight. We are still in the planning phase at this point but hope to complete the project this summer. We will be meeting with Operation Brightside to develop a landscaping plan and get our grant application completed. Once that is done we will begin the development and planting phases. If you would like to help out with this project by donating your time, talents and/or materials please contact me at Christine.smith@insightbb.com . Christine Smith

Neighborhood Dues For 2006

The Candlelight resident annual membership dues are $20 per household. These dues are used to help fund our projects and also cover the cost of printing newsletters and notices. Candlelight Neighborhood Association Inc. is a non-profit organization so dues may be tax deductible under IRS rules at 501(C)(3). Please remit your membership dues to our treasurer, Steve Elble, 1220 Burnwick Court, Louisville 40214, or bring to the next meeting. Only residents that pay their dues will be allowed to be a board member or vote in neighborhood elections or on any other issue concerning Candlelight. All residents are welcome to our meetings.

Neighborhood Yard Sale/Garage Sale in May

A Candlelight Neighborhood Yard Sale is planned for May 13, 2006 from 7:00 A.M. until 12:00 noon on that date. The rain/inclement weather date will be May 20, 2006. We are requesting that everyone plan on having your Spring yard sale or garage sale on that date at your own home. This type of activity has been very successful throughout Metro Louisville and we believe our yard sale can be a success also. Start getting your "sale" items ready. We will advertise this in the Courier-Journal the week of the sale.

Low Income Apartments Proposed

Herman & Kittle Properties of Indianapolis, In. has proposed building 160 low-income subsidized apartments on Fordhaven Rd. off St. Anthony Church Rd. near the Southwest YMCA to be called Canterbury House Apts. The application is before the Louisville Metro Housing & Community Development Department. Mayor Jerry Abramson will have the final say on the project. Page 2.

Second Neighborhood Clean-Up Coming to Candlelight

Candlelight with the cooperation of the City’s Operation Brightside had a very successful clean-up last year. Brightside provided trash bags, gloves and trash pick-up. Again this year we are planning to have a day this summer that we pick up litter and trash on the major streets in our neighborhood. We will have more information on this activity at our meetings and on our web site. Volunteers are needed!!

Parking On Streets Continues to be a Problem

Parking on streets in the Candlelight Neighborhood continues to be a problem. Louisville Metro Police advised the neighborhood that parking on the streets can get your vehicle cited and towed. Vehicles that will be cited are those that are: parked in the same spot for more than 24 hours; block neighbor’s driveways; impede the flow of traffic; block fire hydrants; block access for emergency vehicles; block mail boxes; parked in the wrong direction against on-coming traffic; and those that are left with the engine running. Police advised that vehicles parked on streets are very often the prey of vandals and thieves and could be hit by other vehicles on dark streets. Parking vehicles in yards is illegal and those vehicles can be cited by Louisville Metro IPL (Inspections, Permits, Licenses).

Home Burglaries in Candlelight: Fixing the Problem

This past month, a home on Candleglow Ln. was burglarized. Usually, home break-ins are committed by teenagers who have cut school or break into homes on the way home from school. Usually, money, video games, computers, drugs, jewelry or other items that can be turned into quick money are taken. We need for everyone in Candlelight to start looking out for their neighbor’s homes. We encourage all our neighbors to install dead-bolt locks and outdoor lighting around their homes. Turn on your porch lights at night!! If you see someone trying to get into a home, garage, or shed or hanging around a home where they do not belong, please call 911 and notify the Police. We all know that the diversity and culture of south Louisville is changing but we must take action now to get problems corrected and get Block Watches started in Candlelight. LMPD Resource Officers are available to help you start a Block Watch group and can be reached at 933-2131 or 574-2135.
