Hi WW. I saw your post where you said looking at the benefits and Adrian''s response, you would have voted no on the city/county. With all due respect to Br. Anon.''s views, if you lived in Broomfield you might, just might, feel differently. To me, it is a matter of getting better local government at about the same or at lower costs. Why shouldn''t I vote yes? Much, much better human services for those in need. Better health department services for all. It provides an opportunity for residents in the Adams County area of Broomfield to truly feel they are a part of the Broomfield community. It helps to create and maintain a sense of community and pride in the community. It helps to bring people together. It helps to make local government more accessible to the people because the unit of government providing both city and oounty services is the unit of government closest to the people. I believe the further government is removed from the people, the less say people have in their government. This opportunity for more citizen involvement carries with it the responsbility for citizens to be more involved. If Broomfield citizens do not like the policies of their city council, they have the opportunity to vote every two years for half the Council members. Broomfield voters will have the opporunity to have a strong say in local elections. Currently, Broomfield''s voters do not have much say in who is elected to postions in Boulder, Adams, Jefferson, and Weld counties. For example, Broomfield''s voters could vote 75% in favor of a particular candidate for Boulder County Commissioner and the candidate would still lose. The same is true for Adams, Jefferson, and Weld counties. As a citizen, I want more say in who represents me, more say in my local government, and more say in policies that affect my family and me.
It is for these reasons that I voted for and strongly support the city/county. I also asked myself is the present structure of local government capable of taking us into the next millenium? Maybe, maybe not. There is a movement afoot for more regionalism, for larger units of government that would replace existing cities. Some believe this is the way to go to get more efficiencies on a regional scale. I do not believe this. Every time I''ve seen something like that happen, the individual citizen has less and less of a say in and impact on things and the anticipated efficiency does not happen. I would like for Broomfield to be in a position of determining its own destiny. I see the city and county of Broomfield as bringing and keeping local city and county government close to Broomfield citizens. To me, all of these things are real and tangible benefits from the city/county. Benefits that I believe the majority of Broomfield''s voters also saw when they voted on the city/county amendment in 1998.
There are few processes where there are no questions: Should the process have done this, or should the process have not done that, or why didn''t the process do something else. One of the things I''ve learned over the years is that a given process will never be accepted as fair to some who were and remain opposed to the idea to which the process related. All I know for sure is that we have the city and county of Broomfield and I believe it deserves a chance. I also know that many very good people worked very hard for the city/county.
