Enough Already


With all due respect to the previous message, I have to comment on the points within. I have grown quite tired of some of the vague, utopian meandering that has long been the primary tool in the campaign for the city and county of Broomfield. It borders on cheap advertising tactics. The following excerpt will serve as an enlightening example as to why we should desire the county status:

"It provides an opportunity for residents in the Adams County area of Broomfield to truly feel they are a part of the Broomfield community. It helps to create and maintain a sense of community and pride in the community. It helps to bring people together."

May I ask if you even bothered to see if anyone cares? We all go about our daily lives prioritizing our activities and just trying to minimize lost time. Most aspects of life outside our spheres of influence receive little of our attention. It is evident in voter turnout. It is evident in attendance at city council meetings. It is evident in the fact that more than a third of the several hundred Broomfield residents with whom I have spoken had difficulty naming or could not name all the counties represented in Broomfield. There are far more significant tangible aspects to our lives that demand our time and effort. Do you really think ANYONE is even remotely willing to spend the still climbing cost of $35 million for such abstract and insignificant goals?

I have asked for TANGIBLE benefits of forming the county. With the exception of only two remotely significant points out of ten proposed benefits, we have yet to hear of any. With the clear evidence showing that the county initiative was rushed into place behind the backs of Broomfield residents, another question still remains.

Why was this done?

Without any tangible reason why this would have been in the interest of my community, I am almost afraid to ask for an honest answer. There is little relief in knowing that I will not get one. On this discussion board, you repeatedly state that the formation of the county was not for sinister reasons. However, it has not at all been remotely shown that it was for genuine reasons. Given the intensity with which Broomfield officials pushed the formation of the county, it is obvious that significant motivations existed. Speaking simply as a voice of reason, without providing any tangible benefits to your residents showing these motivations to be wholesome, you leave only one alternative. Given the observed behavior of Broomfield officials, I am not sure I am willing to give them the benefit of the doubt.

You don't mean MANUALLY modifying our scripts do you? I saw that the apostraphe thing got changed but I've assumed that was Neighborhood Link's text editor. I've seen that happen before here (I use apostraphes, turns out as quote marks) ... but 3 post's each slightly different. What's Up With That?

Just about every benefit I outlined in my post to WW is a tangible benefit. Collectively, they make for a better community. Having local government closer to the people is not a tangible benefit? Having more coordinated and effective human services is not a tangible benefit? Having a health department that actually does what it is supposed to do is not a tangible benefit? Having a stronger voice in who gets elected to local office is not a tangible benefit? Having more effective local government with lower property taxes is not a special benefit? Indeed, these are all very tangible benefits. And, these are some of the reasons why Broomfield voters voted in favor of the city/county in 1998. It seems to me that you are arguing against them for the sake of an argument and, with all due respect, you are not making much sense. If you are opposed to the city/county because you don't like Broomfield's elected officials or for whatever other reasons you may have, that's fine. That's your right. But, to say there are no tangible benefits from the city/county is very wrong.
