Paul,

I agree with you the way some of the houses look now, is not the most appealing. Look beyond what you see. Keep in mind all the abandoned crack houses and vacant homes that today are monuments to the people who lovingly restored them. Take the Dickens House, Sunset Bay Inn and 20-30 (or more)individual homes that have been restored to their former splendor. Ours is not the only neighborhood in the counrty that has seen this kind of revitalization. But this is what we have to work with, what's here. If the "potential " of these buildings are ignored, what will be left? If the buildings are beyond repair, wouldn't it be nice to have new homes designed that fit in with the neighborhood as a whole? If a house across the street from you was abandoned, but repairable, even restorable and someone came in and built an ultra modern, out of character replacement that certainly brought little redeeming value to your street, or home, would that not concern you? If it happened on your block, it could happen on your neighbor's block too. Vision...That's what has revitalized this neighborhood. Let's try and keep it that way.

Paul, there are two frame vernacular and craftman-style bungalows built between 1913 and 1918 that may look likea 54 Plymouths now, but could look like my classic 1925 bungalow or my neighbors' craftman bungalows with care and restoration. When we purchased our home in 1982, our Avenue was not considered prime Old Northeast location. However, because of us and others like us who appreciate classic, sturdy houses in great old neighborhoods, our Avenue is now beautiful and well-kept with well-restored homes with few exceptions!! And Avenues South of us that were once full of problem structures with code violations are looking more gorgeous all the time. The solution to unsightly historic structures in poor repair is preservation, code enforcement, neighborhood and city support of respponsible owners who want to restore them, and protection of our residential boundaries, not to demolish the structures. Would love to show you our before and after pictures!!
