I just spoke with Officer LeMonde, our Community Police Officer for the Old Northeast. He said that over the past month, there has been an increase in crime in our neighborhood. There has been a series of robberies where a black male knocks a woman down from behind and takes her purse. These robberies have recently occurred on 12th Avenue and 13th Avenue and across 4th Street in the Round Lake area. There has also been a marked increase in auto thefts. For the month of January, there were 220 auto thefts, which is 20% more than January of 2002.

The pursuit of the robber has obviously been taking precedent over the auto thefts. The police have increased their surveillance and have an undercover squad in the area. Be vigilant and avoid poorly lighted areas at night.

Officer LeMonde said that the best protection against the auto thefts is prevention using The Club, an alarm system and adequate lighting. He said that The Club is the best method, as most thieves will move to another car if they see The Club. As been recently publicized, the police have a No Chase Policy (unless it is a violent felony), so the best hope is prevention or catching someone in the act.

The Historic Old Northeast Neighborhood Association has a Crime Committee which has been inactive for several years for lack of a chairperson and volunteers. We may have identified a chairperson, but need committee members. If you would like to be involved in this committee, please contact me via email or at 896-2237. Committee members will form an action plan for the neighborhood for such crime outbreaks, such as a Crimewatch and work on an effective communication method to residents. Officer LeMonde is going to begin writing a crime update for our quarterly newsletter.

Please pass this email on and communicate this information to your neighbors. If you know of neighbors who would like to be added an email list to receive notices such as this directly, please provide me with their email addresses.

Thank you,
Julie Turner
