There was a large batch of food left at the Ramada in Mitchell Park today. It was posted with a sign 'Free Food'. Some of the food was milk products, other was dry. Although the sentiment of free food may be admirable, the idea of leaving perishable food on a bench for people to eat was not well thought out. Free food that makes people sick is not a very good idea. On the advice of one of our neighbors, a health professor, the perishable food was thrown away. I delivered the dry goods to the Salvation Army on University, and dropped it off in back. There were approximately 50 people there, waiting for Salvation Army to open for the night. They were very grateful to receive the bread and other things. It's too bad the milk, yogurt, etc were not directly delivered to them straight from the refrigerators at Whole Foods.
Please do not do this again. The Salvation Army has organizational expertise in this area, make use of it.
