olden days.....

Yep I am from the olden days and when I went to school teachers were allowed to punish the kids, and yes some even got a swat on the butt if needed. To be in any sports, thier grades had to be C or above or they did not play. Yes thier were bullies back then and even tho we don't like to think it, there is gonna be bullies thru out our whole life. I am sure some even have them on thier jobs now.We all need to learn that we have responsibilities and life is not easy. Too many parents these days do not want to say ''No'' to thier kids and they think that thier kids should always be the exception. Let's face it, no one loves our kids like we do and we are a bit predujiced when it comes to our kids. But for them to learn rules, responsibility and how to get along is very important. Mom and dad can't be there for them always. I am one who believes that too much has been expected of the teachers in raising our kids, but yet we want to tie thier hands in doing it. I know some won't agree with me and that is your privelage but I have been around long enough to see the changes and they are not all for the good.
Okay Koach

I get your point. I know what a planner is. My argument was over it's purpose. Is it a tool the teachers can use to effect discipline when needed or does it a serve a purpose for the teacher to assume less responsibility for what their next day's subject is to be. The planner and it's usage is a double edge sword.

I won't disagree with you on accountability. Hauling a planner around everyday and night is not my idea of teaching responsibility. Yeah, things have changed since we were kids in school. Those changes can be found in the teachers and their union. The greater majority of the school boards in this country have been nuetered. Society has become so litigious school boards no longer want to take the necessary measures to enforce academic achievement because little Johnny or little Kanisha might be incapable of, or simply refuse to follow along with standard set curriculum.

I know Nigel will probably disagree believing I'm laying the blame at the feet of our teachers. I'm not. The education of our children begins and ends at home. From the day they come home from the hospital until the day they decide to leave the nest, it is the parent's responsibility to educate their children. The teachers duties are to strengthen and hone that education and sadly, we as a Nation, have failed our children in this regard.

It's too bad that Johnny or Kanisha come from a broken home. Waaaaaah! Why is that an excuse for finding it difficult in teaching the basic human rights of understanding the difference between right and wrong? In the past 30 years our Nation has become a Nation of latch key kids. There is no disputing this fact. Kids learn from what they are exposed to. If a child is left to their own means of course they will have a different perspective of life and how life works. Therein you will find some of our teachers in the classroom today.

It's not that they don't care. It's what they've learned and believe is right. This form of education learned through their own life experiences and taught to them by similiar professors doesn't make it the academic gold standard for teaching our children.

Parents, you must remain cognizant of your childs upbringing and what they are being taught in school. Carrying a planner is not the sole form of properly educating your child.

it's a detention..not a lynching

a detention is a mild way of dealing with a rule infraction. You act as if your child was being imprisoned here.

Grow up, teach your child to do the same. it's not that hard. Every institution, whether it's school or work, has its rules. The earlier you learn to comply with them, the more peaceful things become. If you don't agree with the rules, then you go somewhere else.

There are good ''growing up'' lessons for children of any age. By middle school, your child should realize the importance of being prepared.
