That would be Herman Jr. Yes, he moved to Macomb, IL and taught for years at Western Illinois University. That would be my uncle.

Regarding Modern Dairy: I have 4 older city directories. According to the oldest one (1934) Lagomarcino-Grupe owned an ice cream factory (Ideal Ice Cream) at that location at the time. The next directory is for 1952 and shows Modern Dairy to be there at that location, and again for the 1962 directory. My last directory (1982) does not show a dairy at that address. There is a furniture stripping business shown for either that location or next to it. The reason I'm not sure, is that it appears the street numbering system was changed on Hershey (at least at that end of Hershey) sometime between 1962 and 1982. I do remember walking down Main street from my Aunt's house on 3rd, probably when I was about 4 to 10 years old. She would give me money to buy small ice cream cones for me and my sister when we visited her. Probably a nickel at that time? It was a big deal! And I do remember your Aunt Bea. I always thought she was a "pretty lady". Very friendly to us kids too. |

I think Modern Dairy was open for about 35 years. I also think Herman & Anna sold it sometime in the 60's. I believe they sold it to Hetzler's who then closed it. The warehouse was across the street, but some kid burnt it down! |
